Programme highlights
Take the first step in your maritime career and gain the licence required to operate as safe and effective deck crew.
This programme is ideal if you are newly employed in the maritime industry working on a vessel or have access to a vessel.
If you are an employer, this programme will compliment your new employee induction training. It will include emergency procedures to help with the safety of the vessel and it’s crew members, including basic extinguisher training, sea survival skills and the completion of the marine radio licence.
You will be able to train for your ticket while being employed, so you can learn while you are on the water. You will complete a MNZ approved Training Record Book (TRB) as part of this programme.
You will be prepared with the skills and knowledge to work under supervision on a range of commercial and passenger vessels less than 24 metres in length, operating in restricted and near coastal waters of New Zealand.
You may be required to complete literacy and numeracy assessments as part of this programme.

There are no academic requirements that need to be met to enter this programme.
Important information
Entry to this qualification is open but completion does not guarantee the award of a Maritime New Zealand licence.
All persons wishing to qualify for a seafarer licence must also check the Maritime New Zealand prior certification and minimum service requirements for that licence. Programme structure
You will need to complete the three courses below (40 credits):
And two ancillary courses below:
- 941.306 Crowd Control
- 941.214 STCW Elementary First Aid
You will need to enrol in these courses. Their completion is required for you to pass the course 943.343 Health and safety support to vessel personnel. If you have previously completed these courses either with MIT or another provider you may be eligible for a credit transfer or cross credit. For more information email RPL.CRT@manukau.ac.nz

Career opportunities
Holders of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge required to work as deck crew on either general commercial or passenger vessels operating in restricted or coastal waters. You can also progress to higher level certificates and larger vessels.
